The Memorial Tournament, played annually at Jack Nicklaus’ Muirfield Village Golf Club outside Columbus, Ohio, is the seventh of eight Signature Events in the 2026 season. It is the final Signature Event featuring a 36-hole cut. There are multiple markets to attack the field of 72 players at DraftKings Sportsbook. Let’s dive in!

Winners Without Scottie Scheffler

Scheffler won his opening tournament of the season, The American Express, but has not won in 10 subsequent starts. He returns to Muirfield Village as the two-time defending champion who has been beaten by a total of FOUR PLAYERS in his previous four events outside the Ohio capital city. If there is an event where the No. 1 player in the OWGR is going to find his way back to the winner’s circle, this may be the place. I’m buying insurance this week!

Ben Griffin (+3200) navigated a long, arduous Trump National Doral for a podium finish (solo third) to end April. Defending his championship last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge, he produced four rounds in the 60s, including 65 on Sunday to hit the podium (T3) again. Making his fourth start at Muirfield Village, he was the 18 and 36-hole leader in 2025 and played in the final group with Scheffler on Sunday before cashing solo second, four shots back.

Alex Smalley (+4800) made his first bogey of the week at Colonial on his 38^th hole. He added just three more and cashed T3, his fourth top-10 payday in his previous five starts on TOUR. He was co-runner-up at the PGA Championship at Aronimink three weeks ago. Quietly ranked 11^th in Strokes Gained: Total, his full bag and recent form makes him a perfect outsider this week in a field containing 18 of the 20 players in the OWGR.

Top 10 (including ties) – Same Game Parlay – (+650)

Russell Henley (+150) and Patrick Cantlay (+196)

Henley arrives smoldering after circling birdies on his final three holes to force, then win, a playoff Sunday at the Charles Schwab Challenge. In the 2025 event, he posted two-under 286 to share fifth and cash inside the top 30 for the third consecutive season at Muirfield Village. In April at the Masters, he picked up his first podium of the season, sharing third place.

Cantlay is one of two multiple winners in the field this week. The champion in 2021 and 2019 shared third in 2022 and was the 54-hole leader in 2018 before he cashed T4. Only Scheffler, Tiger Woods, and Jon Rahm (not eligible) have better career scoring averages at Muirfield Village.

Top 20 (including ties) – Same Game Parlay – (+480)

Scottie Scheffler (-850), Jordan Spieth (+124), and Sam Burns (+126)

Spieth enters Ohio on a run of 12 consecutive cuts made on TOUR, including four of his last six T19 or better. At Muirfield Village, the “Augusta of the North”, he qualified for the weekend 11 times in 13 attempts and signed for T19 or better a whopping nine times. His last three visits resulted in T7-MC-T5. He owns a career scoring average of 71.40.

Making his seventh start, Burns produced the best three results in his previous three visits. In 2023, his even-par total was good enough for T16. He shared 15^th place in 2024 on two-over. Last year, a second-round 65 tied for the lowest round of the week and helped to reach T12. He enters the week on seven consecutive cuts made, all T38 or better, and his previous top 10 was T7 at the Masters.

Top 30 – Familiar Territory – Same Game Parlay – (+400)

Veterans Si Woo Kim (-255), Shane Lowry (-102), and Adam Scott (-125) all have plenty of weekend experience at Muirfield Village. Kim owns nine paydays from 10 starts, including a current run of eight in a row. During his current run, seven results have paid T31 or better. The Korean was the 36 and 54-hole leader at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson before finishing third in his previous start on TOUR. Lowry has five consecutive cuts made with results T32 or better in four of his last five. Scott is also streaking with 11 weekends and counting, including a pair of top-10 paydays in his last five visits. He also cashed in 15 of 16 career visits. Before missing the weekend at the PGA Championship, the Australian rattled off four consecutive paydays of T24 or better. Lowry’s current form isn’t as bright, but he has played every weekend on his own ball since falling short at THE PLAYERS.

The Ladder – Top 5, Top 10, Top 20 (all including ties) – Same Game Parlay – (+2000)

Scottie Scheffler (-150) lost to FOUR PLAYERS at this event in his last four tournaments. That’s the list. Half of the list is not in the field this week. The two-time defending champion cashed solo third in 2023 and solo third in 2021.

Akshay Bhatia (+455) missed the weekend on his 2023 debut but earned T22 money the following season and cashed T16 in 2025 with an 80 on the card. The three-time winner on TOUR already knocked out a Signature Event win at a very demanding Arnold Palmer Invitational in March. He flashed 67-65 to open at the Charles Schwab Challenge last week before fading to T28.

Rickie Fowler (+116) racked up three consecutive top-10 paydays before fading on the weekend at Aronimink to T60. He missed the cut last week at Colonial Country Club, but six of his previous nine paydays at the Memorial are T14 or better, including T7-MC-T9 over the last three years.

The Blue Monster

At 7,739 yards, the Blue Monster ranks second to Torrey Pines (South Course) for the longest track on TOUR in 2026. Unlike Torrey Pines, Doral has water on over half of the holes and twice as many sand penalty areas.

There is plenty of water and sand, but also room to work the golf ball from tee to green.

Green speeds will be a manageable 12 feet plus on the Stimpmeter, due to persistent ocean breezes in South Florida.

Hot and steamy conditions will make the golf ball fly. The weather should not be a factor until the final round on Sunday.

If there are 200 guys in the league, I would expect 197 to play him this week.

The pressure of getting his younger brother over the finish line on Sunday did not bother the older brother. The wobbly back nine was completed in style on the Par-5 finishing hole. Matt’s greenside bunker shot gave younger brother Alex a tap-in for 2.5 years of PGA TOUR status and his first win in 11 starts on TOUR. Both brothers had won in their previous start. Occam’s Razor and all that.

This Week – Cadillac Championship

The Pick: Jake Knapp

Now, it’s back to work. The obvious choice this week is Scottie Scheffler against a perceived “weakened” field.

I completely buy that angle, especially after finishing second in his previous two outings.

Why would you wait to use Scheffler in an event with McIlroy, Fitzpatrick, MacIntyre, Aberg, Schauffele, Cantlay, Rahm, or DeChambeau playing? For an additional 400k at Memorial? Ok, he’s won the last two there, I won’t argue much.

As Steve Miller once remarked: Go on, take the money and run.

If you are like me, I hope not, panicked, and took Scheffler already, there are choices below.

Not many have played multiple rounds or any tournament rounds here. There is no course history to provide an angle. I’ll remind you that Adam Scott and Justin Rose won here in their mid-30s. I will also remind you that Rose won at Torrey Pines THIS year. Funny old game…

The winners from 2024 and 2023 both posted 63 in Round 3. Last year, Thomas tied the course record in Round 1.
In 2024, Scottie Scheffler joined Bernhard Langer as the only two players to win this event after donning the green jacket the week prior. That streak will continue as Rory McIlroy is not in the field.

All five winners ranked in the top five on the Poa Trivialis overseeded greens.

Notables

For the second week in a row, the host course features five Par-3 holes and overseeded Poa Trivialis putting surfaces.
All five champions ranked T12 or better in Par-3 Scoring.
The Par-70 also features three Par-5 holes, one of the toughest trios on TOUR.
The historic Houston Open, established in 1946, has had many homes, but Memorial Park is the only data in use this week.
The overseeded fairways average 30 to 40 yards in the landing area, accounting for the winds that constantly blow in this part of the world.
Poa Trivialis overseeded greens average 7,000 square feet and will not run more than 11.5 feet on the Stimpmeter (wind). The nuanced greens are the defense of this Tom Doak (2019) restoration.
Hole No. 16 is using a new tee box for 2025 and has added 40 yards to the scorecard. There are no significant changes for 2026.
This is the third consecutive year with the overseeded rough cut to 1.25 inches.
The range of winners is 26 to 36 years old.
Lee became the third first-time winner in five events at Memorial Park.
The Official World Golf Ranking is represented by 20 of the top 50 players, highlighted by No. 10 Chris Gotterup, the only two-time winner on TOUR this season.

Thoughts on Valspar

It’s difficult. Really difficult.

The flat tracks of PGA National, Bay Hill, and TPC Sawgrass have been replaced with oak-lined rolling hills and significant elevation changes.

The last four winners have all ranked in the top 10 in Strokes Gained: Putting and top 15 Greens in Regulation.

Par is a decent score again this week. Exactly five players have posted 10-under or better over the last three events.

Five.

This is not a hit-and-giggle or walk in the park after THE PLAYERS Championship. The cut during the last three editions was 2-over, even, and 1-over.

Survive and advance and enjoy the third-hardest three-hole closing stretch on TOUR, “The Snake Pit”.

I have no words.

Missing the cut is one thing. Quitting after one hole is another. Glad to see the online sportsbooks refund folks’ money. That was the right thing to do.

As for One and Done, if you tee it, you played. It sucks, but it’s the right call.

Nobody said you didn’t need a little luck in life, but I feel for the McIlroy/Morikawa contingent the last two weeks. Go buy a lottery ticket or two and see if Karma has returned.

Xander Schauffele will be on my short list of TWO for the U.S. Open. Brooks Koepka is the defending champion at Shinnecock Hills.

Justin Thomas makes sense this week, but I am not taking my chances on a guy who has just returned from back surgery.

Corey Conners has two wins at Valero, so he stays in the stable.

The Hojgaards have never made a cut here.

Jordan Spieth – Colonial or Augusta.

MY CHOICE: Jacob Bridgeman

Proven in Florida, proven in California.

He played from the final group in 2025 and secured third.

His form is T18 or better in every event this year.

Hot weather will make the ball go far this week, but Bay Hill has played over par for the last NINE seasons, regardless of the composition of the field.

The TifEagle Bermuda greens, which have not been overseeded, will be the best and fastest on TOUR yet. Big greens are surrounded by big penalty areas, so don’t be surprised to see balls, especially from the rough, finding the safest tiers on the putting surfaces. Lag putting will be a recipe for success this week.

Notables

Adam Scott is the only player since 1985 to post 62 (2014) and is one of four to share the course record.
Tiger Woods (not entered) has won this event eight times, the most in history. Scheffler is the only multiple winner in the 2026 field.
The fairways are 30 yards wide, two yards wider on average than last week at PGA National and overseeded.
None of the Par-5 holes plays longer than 590 yards.
Since 2016, only Scheffler in 2024 ranked OUTSIDE the top SIX in Par-3 scoring. All four Par-3 holes extend 199 yards or longer.
The last seven winners have ranked in the top 10 in Greens in Regulation.
After adding TifEagle greens for 2016, nine of 10 winners have ranked in the top 15 in SG: Putting, and all were T21 or better. No weaknesses allowed in the bag this week!

LAST WEEK – Cognizant Classic

MY CHOICE: Daniel Berger – T32

Opening with 67, I was encouraged. After two middle rounds of 71-71, I was DISCOURAGED.

After watching Lowry capitulate in the final three holes with a three-shot lead, T32 is easier to stomach than losing $1 million in 30 minutes.

THIS WEEK – Arnold Palmer Invitational

The third of eight Signature Events precedes the biggest payday in golf, THE PLAYERS Championship next week in Ponte Vedra Beach. This week and next will require a podium finish or victory to absorb the dog days of summer.

These are the events to release the hounds and shoot your shot with the biggest and the baddest available. Of the two events spread over the next two weeks, Bay Hill is the more “predictable” of the bunch. TPC Sawgrass, minus the recent McIlroy/Scheffler domination, has produced a cadre of winners, which appeared to be drawn out of a hat.

Also, there is a cut in both events, which SHOULD NOT bother the world’s best, but here we are.

Remember, LIV players, if that is your angle, return for the Masters, PGA Championship, and Open Championship.

MY CHOICE: Scottie Scheffler

Time to kick it into gear for the No. 1 player in the world.

No more farting around on Thursday.

No more Poa annua to piss him off.

The familiarity of Bermuda and two previous victories on a track he loves (nothing worse than T15 in five starts) is the recipe I am looking for this week.

I would not talk you out of playing McIlroy, but this comes down to preference, and I will ride the steadier of the two on a course where hazards do affect play.

I will also remind you that the Truist Championship returns to Quail Hollow Club in May. McIlroy has won that event, a Signature Event, approximately 49,390 times. See you in May, Rors!
