Philly Special

Merion. Philadelphia Cricket Club. Aronimink.

Classic American courses.

Donald Ross won’t bother too many off the tee. The massive greens, unsurprisingly, are the defense. The ability to spin wedges and hold shots on the proper shelves are the first steps to success. Putting from the wrong side of ridges and getting up and down will test the patience of the world’s best players.

After four consecutive weeks of Poa Trivialis overseeding, slick Bentgrass covers the putting surfaces.

Bomb and gouge? Better be able to spin it out of the rough.

The hardest holes (Nos. 11, 15, 17, and 18) are on the inward nine and will determine the champion. A trio of Par-3 holes stretches over 215 yards each. There are only two Par-5 opportunities.

Notes:

  • Field of 156 players.
  • There are no amateurs in the field.
  • 97 of the top 100 in the OWGR are playing.
  • Top SEVENTY and ties play the weekend.
  • The purse will be announced later in the week, but the winner takes home 750 FedExCup points.

Last WEEK – Truist Championship

Rory McIlroy – T19

He won this event four times and hit the top 10 eight times.

If you have already burned him, you will need a bomber to cover the big ballpark in wet conditions. Schauffele (T60) has run second here the previous two events, but he’s my man for Shinnecock Hills. Ludvig Aberg (T8) would have to be the third choice. A sneaky play might be Adam Scott, Rickie Fowler, or Justin Thomas. Those who are desperate might consider red-hot Alex Smalley or Akshay Bhatia.

Adam Scott – T24

Rickie Fowler – T2

Justin Thomas – 13th

This Week – 108th PGA Championship

The Pick – Bryson DeChambeau

He won on Donald Ross’s Pinehurst. He’s won in this part of the world at Winged Foot. It’s this week or the U.S. Open.

Others: Ludvig Aberg, Brooks Koepka, Matt Fitzpatrick, J.J. Spaun, and Rickie Fowler.
