Angles
The weather is going to factor. Wet, windy coastal Crosby Clambake conditions plus a Pro-Am for 36 holes should be a test.
Pebble Beach provides the smallest greens on TOUR and ranks in the top five of shortest tracks in use annually. Generous fairways can provide a launching point for a wedge contest. Missing GIR requires a confident short game.
I didn’t write this anywhere else this week so I’ll get it off my chest here. It’s amazing how many top players have not played this event. Read HFC for more details, but I found that astounding.
Why not?
Florida guys don’t care for Poa annua?
Nobody likes playing 6.5 rounds with amateur partners?
Preparing for three courses and the unpredictable weather?
The circus environment that comes with celebrities/celebrity watchers?
Why?
A purse of 20 million and a limited field of 80 guys.
Players to consider for Top 10, Top 20, or Top 40 action:
Tommy Fleetwood (35/1) was the benefactor of McIlroy not closing the deal to begin 2024 in Dubai. The wind, rain, and ability to grind in those conditions make the Englishman jump off the page. For those of you who prefer more of a course horse, I cannot talk you out of Matt Fitzpatrick (33/1) after cashing T6 in 2022 and T12 at the U.S. Open.
Nicolai Hojgaard (45/1) won the DP World Tour Championship and has added two second-place paydays since November. Fresh off his 2024 PGA TOUR debut of solo second at Torrey Pines, he will try to keep the momentum rolling up the coast at Pebble Beach.
Nick Taylor (75/1) has three top-20 paydays in his last four visits, including hoisting the title in 2020.
Cameron Davis (80/1) possesses the tee-to-green game to push through the breezes and elements.
Patrick Rodgers (100/1) quietly snuck into the top 10 last week (T9) at Torrey Pines. The Stanford grad is more than familiar with golf in this part of the world.
Maverick McNealy (150/1) considers this week a home game. Growing up on the links of Pebble Beach, he’s posted solo second and T5 as his best paydays as a professional. After satisfying the terms of his major medical exemption last week, he now has full status.
Over the last two years. Taylor Moore (175/1) produced T15 and T16 in his first two visits. A super putter, Moore knocked off a solid field last March to win at the Valspar Championship.
San Jose State alum Mark Hubbard (200/1) thrives on the grasses in this part of California. Leading the field in SG: Approach at Torrey Pines, he found 57 of 72 GIR, second to only Tony Finau.

Recapping Last Week – Farmers Insurance Open
MY CHOICE: Jason Day – MC
For those of you saving the Aussie, who has never MC at Pebble Beach, for this week, smart move. Amazing to be let down by his chipping and putting but that’s why they call it gambling.
Other to Consider:
Tony Finau: Making his 10th visit, he’s T24 or better in eight of nine. Over his last four, he’s hit the top 10 three times and MC once. For those of you playing safe or can’t decide, I’d start here. He will also defend in Mexico in next month. The safest play on the board, Finau comes through with T6.
Max Homa: I’m going to save him for Riviera, but he’s defended once in California already at Fortinet (2021, 2022). The last player to successfully defend was Woods from 2005-2008 #FourPeat. Big week driving the golf ball but a better one getting up and down. T13.
Keegan Bradley: Another proven player in big ballparks, he ran second to Homa last year, also closing with 66. Making his 13th start, he will have a plan. Had to rely too much on the short game this week and it let him down. T43.
Sungjae Im: Looking to make it six-from-six, he will look to make it three straight in the top 10. First MC since late July.
Longshots
Harris English – T64
Patrick Rodgers – T9
Taylor Moore – T70
This Week – AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am
The second of eight Signature Events, there is NO CUT this week. Toss in wind, rain, and amateurs, and it might be a week to stray from the biggest of names.
Or not.
My theory in this game is simple: You’re not missing out. If you don’t take Scheffler this week and he wins, it’s not one and done. He will play all of the majors, THE PLAYERS, most of the other six Signature Events, and the first two rounds of the FedExCup Playoffs. He’s good enough to win again and possibly after that.
MY CHOICE: Jordan Spieth
He embraces the format, can handle the weather, and has the results to back it up. If you’re saving him for the Masters, please re-read the above. I’m trying to catch him on the up on ANOTHER course he has figured out. I didn’t think he would fire at Kapalua, and I was wrong by miles (solo third). After back-to-back top six paydays, I’m going in.
Other to Consider:
Viktor Hovland: The 2018 U.S. Amateur winner here has plenty of reps at Pebble. He lives in Oklahoma where wind is just part of life.
Rory McIlroy: To me, he makes absolutely no sense this week. Not with the events left on the schedule. Not with the tracks he’s crushed still to come. I’ll point out he’s on fire. Got it. Desert golf, with no wind and warm temperatures, is exactly the opposite of what he will face this week.
Ludvig Aberg: There’s nothing left to be written about the Swedish star in the making. The next step for gamers is figuring out his sweet spot. If you’re on the fence this week about the weather/event/choice there are a ton of worse places to default to than this guy.
Tommy Fleetwood: Can we get somebody to whisper in his ear that is U.S. Open week?
Jason Day: Because I had him last week.
