Round 1 Thoughts: Sentry Tournament of Champions

Defending champ Justin Thomas joined Harris English with 65 (-8) to share the lead after Round 1.

Thomas is looking to join Australians Stuart Appleby and Geoff Ogilvy as back to back champs.

Round 1 in paradise in the books.

Sebastian Munoz and Tony Finau are the only two players above par so it was a perfect day for golf for everyone else.

First round scoring average was 69.62 so almost 3.5 shots UNDER PAR.

Weather is perfect all week so expect more low ones and shifts on the leaderboard.

— Justin Thomas led the field with eight birdies. Hardly surprising after reading the graphic above.

— Harris English hit all 15 fairways.

— Robert Streb opened with 67 also on his only visit in 2015 and finished T8.

— Sergio Garcia won on debut a lifetime ago and leads the field Strokes-Gained: Around the Green.

— Canadian Nick Taylor opens in the 60s for the second time in two visits.

— Ryan Palmer circled two eagles, most of anyone.

— Patrick Reed made the only eagle of the day on No. 18.

— Sungjae Im birdied his first five holes on the back but made par on both the Par-5 holes.

— Adam Scott (T9) leads the field in SG: Tee to Green, Approach the Green, Ball-Striking, Proximity and is T1 GIR.

Abraham Ancer and Michael Thompson are the only two player who gained more than 3 strokes on the greens. Neither are in the top 20. Ancer (T22) led in Putting: Birdie-or-Better Percentage.
