Andrew Landry showed guts down the stretch to create, throw-away and convert a six-shot lead to win for the second time on TOUR.
1.) Andrew Landry needed to birdie the last hole in 2018 to force a playoff with Jon Rahm, which he eventually lost. This time around he birdied the final two holes to close out his second win on TOUR.
2.) Landry’s winning total of 26-under matched Adam Long’s total from last year and Jason Dufner’s from Year 1 with the Stadium Course in the rotation. The other winning totals were 25-under and 20-under. #EasyPeasy.
3.) The Lamar grad entered the week in the new season MC-MC-MC-MC-MC-T23-MC-MC.
4.) 31 birdies led the field. 31 Par-Breakers also led the field from our winner.
5.) Long won last year on MC-MC-MC-T63 so the desert cures what ails.
6.) Abraham Ancer and Sam Burns both tied the Stadium Course record of 63. Ancer moved up four spots to second while Burns jumped 37 places to T6.
7.) Ancer played the Stadium Course 66-63 and only made two bogeys in 72 holes. Ballin’. His solo second matches his best TOUR finish from last year’s NORTHERN TRUST. He won the 2018 Australian Open.
8.) Scottie Scheffler has teed it up eight times this season and has four top-10 paydays.
9.) Scheffler followed T5 at RSM with solo third this week. He’s cashed in the top five in three of his four. #Legit.
10.) Bud Cauley, my biggest play of the week at Covers.com, (5* top 20 +375) continued his excellent play (T4) in the desert. He’s cashed in four of five and nothing worse than T14; 71-under during those events.
11.) Sepp Straka played his final 55 holes without a bogey and cashed T4. His best payday on TOUR is third when he needed 23-under at Barbasol last summer. This was his 10th start this season and his second T4. He also has seven MC.
12.) Tom Hoge backed up his T12 at Sony with T6. Add that to solo second at The Greenbrier to start the season and he’s cooking.
13.) Ryan Moore last teed it up at the ZOZO Championship before Halloween and was almost DFL. He returned this week for T6. Because golf, that’s why.
14.) Gamers who were thinking to themselves this weekend, “Man, Rickie Fowler never gets the job done when he leads early in tournaments” aren’t wrong. He’s led 10 times after 36 holes. He’s won once.
15.) Rookie Sebastian Cappelen’s best finish this season was T35 before T6.
16.) A healthy Grayson Murray has always caught my eye. He was 14-under on the Stadium Course (T10) and is in the field at Torrey Pines this week. His 27 birdies were second to Landry’s 31.
99.) Number of putts needed by Landry and Sebastian Munoz (T21) this week to lead the field.
18.) In his eighth start this season Sungjae Im picks up top 10 No. 3 and top 25 No. 6. #FreeMoney.
