Rickie Fowler has company as Scottie Scheffler has joined him at the top of the leader board.
.) 54-hole cut so you have today to bite what’s left of your fingernails. Remember you needed -9 last year year to play Sunday!
.) Fowler and Scheffler are keeping with the motif that previous experience is not required here as they are both -15.
.) Of the top 11 players, seven have burned their two chances on La Quinta – Nicklaus Tournament. Those players will conclude the week Stadium-Stadium so I wouldn’t be writing anything down with Sharpie just yet.
.) Andrew Landry is reliving glories past as he sits one off the lead. The 36-hole leader in 2018 played in the final group on Sunday and made a birdie on the final hole to force a playoff with Jon Rahm. Streak is now 12 straight rounds of 70 or better here. Landry has already posted 66 (Round 1) at the Stadium Course.
.) Tony Finau’s jet leg is gone after playing in Hong Kong last week. His 62 at Nicklaus Tournament was the low one of the day and moved him up 45 spots to fourth.
.) Not all 63s are created equal, but they were all posted at La Quinta. Ted Potter, Jr. moved up 68 spots to T6 while Charley Hoffman and Brandon Hagy moved up a whopping 101 spots each but didn’t even crack the top 35 (T39).
.) Ben Martin continues his flirtation as my muse this week and last. His 64 was the best of the day and T-best of the week at the Stadium. He jumped 92 spots to T29.
.) Host Phil Mickelson was beaten by 10 shots by playing partner Tony Finau. It’s not happening for him this week but I’ll never have to consider him again in OAD. Fine by me.
.) Brian Harman is the only bogey-free player and is T12.
