Ain’t nobody here but us chickens…
2021-2022 One and Done
Gamers, we all get a break this year and will only have 48, instead of 50, events to wield our swords! I know some leagues, like mine, won’t start until the turn of the year but that won’t stop me from putting out my weekly column.
The purpose of this column is to free my mind and have some fun all while trying to find some winners. From a transparency standpoint, most of my recent years are below so you can take it or leave.
The price is the same as last year but my Venmo is @Mike-Glasscott if you would like to donate.
Sometimes we gotta look back before we look forward. I wasn’t a huge fan of the 50 event season last year, especially in the WGC and PLAYERS as I left a ton on the table. Oh, and having Jon Rahm in the WRONG OPEN didn’t help matters either.
The name of this game is picking winners and it’s hard. So is losing in two playoffs to Patrick Cantlay!
I was proud of my top 10 rate and MC avoidance but would trade either for MOAR WINNERS.
Let’s have a great 2021-2022!
Any questions, mikeglasscott@gmail.com and @MikeGlasscott on Twitter.
Last Week – Fortinet Championship
First pick of the season* and thankfully my season-long game doesn’t start until January!
Always a brutal start because of the 50 or so KFT guys in the field and the layoff from whenever folks were eliminated after last season.
I went with a veteran banker.
I left with nothing except a kick in the balls and a trunk slamming.
Such is this game sometimes.
One down, 47 more to go!
*picks will be used again in 2022, if necessary
THE CHOICE: Kevin Na – MC
Sure, I could save him for Vegas or Colonial but he’s to the point now where I don’t have to. He’s comfortable in his skin, life and career and is free as a bird. I saw all the evidence I needed at East Lake two weeks ago. He never had finished inside the top 20 before yet tied Jon Rahm for gross low on the week. Form is fire and he’s played well here.
I guess I should have just played 2x champ Brendan Steele, taken my mediocre cash and been on my way. Only MC six times last year so let’s hope this isn’t a trend that I’m setting in the new season.
Na sat T24 after 18 holes but 77 in Round 2 sent him packing early.
Warm Blankets: The guys who should. Safe selections that will help maintain leads. Opinions on why or why not for this event or save for later.
Jon Rahm: Because he’s the best player on the planet at the moment and can just show up and win. I’m saving him for prize pools double this where his juices get flowing. He only won ONE time last year so it’s hardly a given, odds be damned. Missed the Pro-Am due to illness and MC after 72-71. Nice warm up before Whistling Straits where he flipped the switch to I’M AWESOME again. The lesson here is simple: play monsters in monster events.
Webb Simpson: Probably will want to prove that he shouldn’t have been snubbed for the Ryder Cup. No chance I’m playing him on a non-Bermuda greens event. And he didn’t name his daughter Fortinet. Sat T10 after 65 on Saturday but they only pay out after 72 holes. Final round 74 knocked him to T30.
Hideki Matsuyama: Tough greens to putt will help bring the field back to him. His ball-striking makes all of the difference. Legend at TPC Scottsdale and will be one of a few top players to head to Japan for the ZOZO in October. I’m holding out. Birdie-Birdie-Eagle finished papered over the cracks of a very average week. If you pulled the trigger and cashed T6, you won’t care!
Will Zalatoris: No longer chasing anything he can focus on ONE THING: WINNING. Grew up in the area so I’m moving him up the list. Came out of the traps 68-67 and sat 3 back after 36. 71-70 on the weekend kicked him out of the top 10 to T11.
Cameron Champ: Of his three wins two have come early doors in the season. A great memory of winning here for his dying grandfather and is from Sacramento. Did not defend last year either so I’d think he “owes” them one. MC damp fart.
Emiliano Grillo: Wish his form was a bit more consistent but T29 or better in 4 of 6 here including a win seems a safe bet. MC as well.
Spicy: This might be a week for sending out an “unknown” and saving a start. You just might get lucky. Or MC.
Brendan Steele: This one kinda writes itself. Happy hunting ground. T42 and $25k.
Harold Varner III: Those who love the trend will love him this week but none have gone for a top 10. First win is always the hardest and only two of seven winners here are first timers. Nothing wrong with T16 but that’s not what we’re trying to do here haha.
Maverick McNealy: Stanford and Bay Area and consistent as hell to close last season. His best results have been on tiny greens at Pebble and Harbour Town. Fifth time here. Played in the final group, shot 68 and didn’t win. That’s life in the big city. Solo second will be hard to top so let’s grab him at Pebble when he wins!
Chez Reavie: Pounds it tee to green and that works this week. Hasn’t missed in seven tries here either. T28 makes it eight straight.
Brandt Snedeker: Plenty of wins on Poa and in California and should have won here in 2018. Fits the “Cink” winner category. MC 68-74 (-2).
3 AM at the Blackjack Table: Caution is thrown to the wind. Maybe not the best for this format but what the hell, right? Might throw these in if you’re in need of a miracle.
Doc Redman – MC (-2), Stephan Jaeger – MC, Patrick Rodgers – T6, Sahith Theegala – T47, Brandon Hagy – MC, John Huh – MC, Justin Suh – T58, Scott Piercy – T11.
This Week – Sanderson Farms Championship
Annually a coming out party for a youngster to make the leap and pick up win No. 1. Of the seven winners only Sergio Garcia last year is the only player with a previous TOUR victory on the CV.
Times are changing as SFC as of 2019 is no longer an opposite field event with a slight purse and limited status for winning. Now it’s a trip to the Masters, 500 FedExCup points and $7 million ($1.26 million winner) on the line.
More fisherman casting lines these days! The field, while not spectacular generally speaking, has plenty of names to consider.
Please read Horses for Courses and Expert Picks if you need more ideas!
THE CHOICE: Will Zalatoris
Won’t be thrilled with how he finished last time out at Silverado and I bet he wasn’t thrilled not to be playing on the Ryder Cup team. Only one way to force you into that conversation: WIN.
And the win again. And keep racking up top finishes.
He’s done everything but the win part.
This won’t be the last time he’s on this list but it might be the lightest field he needs to conquer.
Warm Blankets: The guys who should. Safe selections that will help maintain leads. Opinions on why or why not for this event or save for later.
Sungjae Im: Went close here in 2019 before losing in a playoff to Munoz. Birdie machine doesn’t have a ton of weaknesses.
Mito Pereira: Solo third last week suggests slowing down isn’t any option for him. Appears that he’s also not satisfied just having a TOUR card either.
Cam Davis: Won at Detroit Golf Club last summer and that’s the same guy who redesigned CCofJ. Plenty of power but will need a bit of help from the putter this week.
Sam Burns: Checks all the boxes and should be on the first page of the leaderboard as the betting favorite.
Charley Hoffman: Trending here but the veteran sticks out a few other places down the road.
Spicy: This might be a week for sending out an “unknown” and saving a start. You just might get lucky. Or MC.
Harold Varner, III: Consistently knocking on the door and his only top 10 in 2021 was on Bermuda (Harbour Town). No win yet…
Si Woo Kim: Loves Wyndham and the Donald Ross redo there.
Matthias Schwab: Former Vandy player will be plenty familiar with Bermuda. Roaring in Europe.
Chad Ramey: Home game for the former Mississippi State Bulldog and Tupelo native. Sat T5 after 36 holes after Monday qualifying in 2018 before cashing T26.
Carlos Ortiz: A pair of top five results from three visits. Picked up his first TOUR win last year in Houston in October.
3 AM at the Blackjack Table: Caution is thrown to the wind. Maybe not the best for this format but what the hell, right? Might throw these in if you’re in need of a miracle.

2018-19
My contributions for the major championships and PLAYERS selection were worse than bad so to still break the $10 million mark with those awful results was encouraging.
Another valuable lesson learned is that the Playoffs are for the big boys. Now, WHICH big boys make this more and more difficult and that’s why it’s enjoyable and maddening all at the same time. Only McIlroy and Woods have won the FedExCup twice so start there.
