Well, the course got ran over!

Wet all week.

Lift, clean and place to start and finish.

Wide open, big greens.

25-under wins!

When 25-under is the winning score and 20-under or better is required to hit the podium, good luck in any formats. Now we have something for next time around but I’d be surprised if anyone had a great week.

THE CHOICE: The Course Record Holder – Ryan Palmer (T47)

He sat 14-under heading into Sunday before putting it into the wall with 75 when 65 was needed.

Of the top four players, three shot 66 or better in the final round so that wasn’t hopeful thinking but rather a requirement.

Safety Dance:

Players in here will appear obvious until I explain why they might not be. Remember “one” means ONCE, not again down the road.

Scottie Scheffler: Another with a home game this week plus a 59 to his name. T47 as another Texan didn’t break par in the final round.

Marc Leishman: Noted wind player coming off T5 at Masters and WIN at Zurich suggests his form won’t be the issue. Second on debut at Trinity Forest. As Lee Westwood joked at his press conference this week, scraped it around 15-under and not hit the top 20. T21.

Will Zalatoris: Local with plenty of local knowledge, like Scheffler, won’t care what the winning score will need to be. Only concern is managing the off course and on course for this home game. T17 with four rounds 70 or better. Has no problem making birdies.

Keith Mitchell: Another who is plenty warm at the moment after bending his putter back the right direction. T26 after closing with 66 to save a few blushes.

Spicy:

Thomas Pieters: I’m not sure you’re going to burn him anywhere else and he absolutely clobbers it. Plenty of recent finishes T15 or better worldwide. MC on 5-under. Yep…

Carlos Ortiz: Was going GREAT last week before Sunday and 78 or whatever that saw him plummet. North Texas grad will be right at home. T21. Great start 11-under, quiet finish 4-under, but there’s something cooking here.

Si Woo Kim: Never afraid to make a shit load of birdies. Wide open off the tee will help. T55. Bah.

Aaron Wise: Made a ton of birdies at Trinity Forest across town posting 23-under in a debut event.  Opened with 64, played the last 54 holes 2-under. Rubbish.

3 AM at the Blackjack Table:

Charl Schwartzel – T3, Camilo Villegas – WD, Wyndham Clark – T39, Scott Piercy – MC, Sung Kang – T47

Just the second time at Kiawah Island will mean not many have been here before but those who have will be facing a different track than 2012.

The prize pool of $11 million means even second place will pay great this week so it’s time to sort thru the best of the best to pick up the Wannamaker Trophy on Sunday.

PGA Championship winners over the last decade have hovered around and inside the top 20 in the OWGR minus debutant Keegan Bradley (108).

I’d suggest this trend continues this week.

Not on this monster. Not under these conditions.

THE CHOICE: Viktor Hovland

Blazing form, blazing ball-striking and a maturity well beyond his years has my attention this week.

He’s hit the podium in his last two events, both difficult tracks (Quail Hollow, Innisbrook) and solved TPC Sawgrass for T9.

My choices have thinned out as I’ve thrown it all against the wall trying to catch up. I’ve made this bed. Time to lie in it!

Safety Dance:

Players in here will appear obvious until I explain why they might not be. Remember “one” means ONCE, not again down the road or don’t perhaps “fit” to this event.

Rory McIlroy: He’s done this before. He’s done this before winning the event before. No concerns. Zero.

Jon Rahm: Life has found a rhythm and he’s knocked the rust off. Time to put it into gear.

Dustin Johnson: Runner up the last two PGA Championships and has no problem with wind or length. Plays better at TPC Southwind though…

Spicy:

Bryson DeChambeau: Not sure how science and wind get along but his metrics are nothing short of fantastic.

Justin Thomas: Not many guys win THE PLAYERS and the PGA Championship in the same season.

Tony Finau: His record in majors is fantastic but just one thing is missing…

Patrick Reed: Getting up and down and rolling in putts to save par never hurts. Few are better at it.

Cameron Smith: All the tools in the kit plus being comfortable when the fans turn on.

My contributions for the major championships and PLAYERS selection were worse than bad so to still break the $10 million mark with those awful results was encouraging.

Another valuable lesson learned is that the Playoffs are for the big boys. Now, WHICH big boys make this more and more difficult and that’s why it’s enjoyable and maddening all at the same time. Only McIlroy and Woods have won the FedExCup twice so start there.
