Last Week – Zurich Classic of New Orleans

THE CHOICE: Week Off

I couldn’t use Cameron Smith or Marc Leishman because, well, the name of the honking game!

I was DONE.

But, they were my choice at PGATOUR.COM Expert Picks.

If you’re scoring at home, there have been three partner games this year.

I’ve picked all three winners.

I’m starting a change.org petition for the TOUR to change ALL OF THEIR EVENTS to 2-man teams.

FOLLOW ME TO FREEDOM!

Safety Dance:

Players in here will appear obvious until I explain why they might not be. Remember “one” means ONCE, not again down the road.

Ryan Palmer: T4 with Spieth and defending champ with Rahm. I’ll point out that no winners here in ANY FORMAT have defended with a T10 or better. But you get Rahm for free so yeah. 7th in a solid defense.

Danny Willett: Ryder cup audition? Playing with his mate? Won’t use him anywhere else! T8 with Hatton. And he didn’t get Covid again. But his partner did. Tough deal.

Charl Schwartzel: Because you get Louis and he’s also making some cuts. Just a brutal way to end it with the water tee ball on the first playoff hole. P2.

Spicy:

Brendon Todd: Dawgs barkin and Kirk is shit hot fire right now. 27th out of 33 who made the cut. Suboptimal.

Harold Varner III: T2 last week paired with Grace who won earlier and went close here in 2019. MC.

Doubting Thomases: Lewis and Pieters can knock it around just about anywhere. T8

Roberto Castro: T5 with partner Cameron Tringale last year. MC

Nick Taylor: Returns with Martin Laird who has hit the top 10 in his last two including one with Taylor last year. MC

Joseph Bramlett: Teamed with Maverick McNealy who just picked up T4 at HHI. Bramlett has cashed in five of six. MC

3 AM at the Blackjack Table:

Lanto Griffin MC, Chez Reavie MC, Nick Watney – T11, Jason Dufner – MC, Kris Ventura -T25

This Week – Valspar Championship

Welcome to the Paul Casey Invitational presented by Valspar!

The Englishman has done the business the last two years so surely three on the bounce is out the window, right?

He’s been playing really well in 2021 but was a #dampfart at the Masters, another place where he plays well and MC at Heritage.

Chase history!

THE CHOICE: Patrick Reed

The more difficult, the more better.

Already won on a nasty Torrey Pines layout earlier this season so a bit of graft is right up his alley. He should have forced a playoff here in 2018 but his bogey at the last saw him share second instead. He was part of a three-man playoff in 2015 when Jordan Spieth took home the title so he’s had two front row seats on how to close it out here.

His form is of zero concern and neither is his all-world short game.

Safety Dance:

Players in here will appear obvious until I explain why they might not be. Remember “one” means ONCE, not again down the road.

Paul Casey: I can see why, yes…

Corey Conners: Much, much, much different than third alternate this time around. Heck, I might move him up and save Reed. Stay tuned.

Louis Oosthuizen: Since The Open isn’t at The Old Course, feel free.

Jason Kokrak: Another who loves Riviera and plays well here.

Spicy:

Abraham Ancer: T18 or bust, baby!

Viktor Hovland: Claims he hates Florida. No palm trees this week!

Justin Rose: I’m not sure where he’s at. Fast starts and quiet finishes. History here doesn’t chase me away.

Charley Hoffman: The oak trees should remind him of the Oaks Course in San Antonio.

3 AM at the Blackjack Table:

Emiliano Grillo, Charles Howell III, Peter Uihlein, Brandt Snedeker, Roger Sloan

Check out my previous results below if you need a history lesson.

2018-19

My contributions for the major championships and PLAYERS selection were worse than bad so to still break the $10 million mark with those awful results was encouraging.

Another valuable lesson learned is that the Playoffs are for the big boys. Now, WHICH big boys make this more and more difficult and that’s why it’s enjoyable and maddening all at the same time. Only McIlroy and Woods have won the FedExCup twice so start there.
