Last Week – Sony Open in Hawaii

Daniel Berger – T7

Shot 18-under and that wasn’t good enough for a win or a podium. Easiest scoring conditions in almost 40 years on TOUR brought everyone into the fold.

Can’t complain about a top 10 too much so I won’t.

As I pointed out last week, put a circle around Berger for TPC Southwind. TPC River Highlands and Honda. He’ll also defend at Colonial. #UrWelcome.

Safety Dance:

Webb Simpson – T4: Seven straight inside the top 20 here and three straight in the top five. Posted three rounds of 65 or better and didn’t hit the podium!

Sungjae Im – T56: Keep forgetting his 22 sometimes and shouldn’t be an automatic selection.

Harris English – T32: Opened with 70 and that was that this week. Hard to go back-to-back.

Charles Howell III – T19: Back door top 20 with 64 on Sunday, his best of the week.

Spicy:

Players in here will appear obvious until I explain why they might not be. Remember “one” means ONCE, not again down the road.

Ryan Palmer – T41: That’s what 11-under cashed this week.

Kevin Kisner – T32: 12-under but not enough low ones.

Collin Morikawa – T7: Imagine if he figures out how to hole three footers.

Billy Horschel – T7: One bad round at Kapalua on Sunday stopped the top 10 streak. Would have reached three after Sony. Get him in.

THE CHOICE:  Scottie Scheffler

He had a front row seat here last year as he played with Andrew Landry in the final group. In form and trending, Scheffler won’t be worried about going low since he already has a 59 in his locker. The Texan also posted 64 on NT last year with A DOUBLE BOGEY. Leaning on the YOUTH to break my duck!

Safety Dance:

Patrick Cantlay: Desert dog feasts in Las Vegas and posted T9 here on his last visit. Lighter field than what he’ll find at Torrey, Riviera.

Abraham Ancer: Figuring it out here and had the lowest aggregate on the Stadium Course last year (66-63). Solo second last year, T18 the previous year. Don’t let the MC last week fool you as he was 3-under.

Tony Finau: Should destroy the Par-5 holes and pound GIR. Will be helped by the new grass at NT as that should bring the putting back to the field and that’s his biggest weakness.

Patrick Reed: Former champion here is dynamite around the greens but this is his first visit in three years.

Spicy:

Matthew Wolff: California roots, bomber, and goes low with ease. Hasn’t played since the Masters so the rust will have to come off quickly. Can’t start 70-something here.

Adam Hadwin: Incredible course horse but the current form is icicles. The astute gamers will realize that Landry and Long won here on absolute garbage form.

Sungjae Im: Makes a ton of birdies but it’s just a matter of catching him on the HOT WEEK.

Phil Mickelson: Your host this week is wonderfully all-or-nothing here and checks the “enters week on shit form” box as well.

2018-19

My contributions for the major championships and PLAYERS selection were worse than bad so to still break the $10 million mark with those awful results was encouraging.

Another valuable lesson learned is that the Playoffs are for the big boys. Now, WHICH big boys make this more and more difficult and that’s why it’s enjoyable and maddening all at the same time. Only McIlroy and Woods have won the FedExCup twice so start there.
