Last Week – Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

THE CHOICE: 

Patrick Cantlay:

I might quit.

Co-54-hole leader and posts 2-over in the final round from the final group.

I would have felt worse to have Wolff not close out the deal in the playoff though.

Tough week all around but Cantlay is automatic at this event as long as he continues to play it.

Safety Dance:

Bryson DeChambeau: T8 – Opened with 62 but 71 on Saturday killed any chances of winning. Fourth consecutive top 10 here.

Webb Simpson: T13 – And this is why I save him for Wyndham! Or maybe TPC Scottsdale.

Harris English: MC- Tough beat across the board this week as 5-under wasn’t enough to see the weekend. Needed 7-under! Whoa!

Collin Morikawa: MC- His 6-under wasn’t enough either. #BadBeat.

Spicy:

Matthew Wolff: P2- yeah, he’s really, really good and has no fear of going low. Flying along.

Denny McCarthy: 57th- Made  28-footer at the buzzer to make the weekend but couldn’t string two low ones together. First finish in three here outside T15.

Cameron Davis: T52- All four rounds 70 or better and posted 10-under. Yep, welcome to one of the easiest tracks on TOUR!

3 AM at the Blackjack Table:

Kristoffer Ventura: MC- 5-under victim

Maverick McNealy: MC – Should have known better when I saw the amount of experts on him this week.

Aaron Wise: MC – Wrong young player who lives here (Suh).

THE CHOICE:  Matthew Wolff

Remember, this prize purse is almost 10 million and the winner takes home almost $1.8 million so it’s hardly a throw-away week. In fact, it’s the total opposite as it’s one of the top 15 events on the 50-week schedule so choose wisely.

I’m going with the guy who almost won it last week. Did everything but win on the weekend and should be more than up for the challenge. His record in majors is fantastic, I get that, but he’s also smoldering currently.

Safety Dance:

Rory McIlroy: Dad is playing well and looks like he’s getting closer to putting all four rounds together.

Justin Thomas: Any course. Any event. Get lucky and take him the week he wins!

Xander Schauffele: Like Thomas, has no problems anywhere, especially in limited field events. Not many holes in this profile either.

Spicy:

Hideki Matsuyama: Hasn’t snapped out of his funk yet but this has been his time of season before.

Louis Oosthuizen: Too many good rounds lately including 64 to close last week.

Collin Morikawa: Copy and paste from last week. 6-under MC isn’t going to turn me off.

Tyrrell Hatton: Form has been fantastic and he won last week at Wentworth. Hard to win anywhere back to back but his form since June has been excellent.

2018-19

My contributions for the major championships and PLAYERS selection were worse than bad so to still break the $10 million mark with those awful results was encouraging.

Another valuable lesson learned is that the Playoffs are for the big boys. Now, WHICH big boys make this more and more difficult and that’s why it’s enjoyable and maddening all at the same time. Only McIlroy and Woods have won the FedExCup twice so start there.
