Last Time — Workday Charity Open

Well, that was something. One of the best at this event, and in the world, laid a complete and utter egg. I will thank Rosey for making it quick and painless. There’s nothing worse than missing a 3-footer for par at the last on Saturday morning to MC so I appreciate the collapse in REAL TIME.

Dumping Reed and Rose into the MC heap in the last four weeks is the reason why I’m irrelevant this year in OAD.

THE PICK – Justin Rose – MC

This week’s prize pool is $9.3 million as opposed to $6.1 so the joke’s on, well, me. Let’s hope this Mulligan pays off!

Safety Dance:

Patrick Cantlay: T7 because they count all four rounds and all 72 holes. Closed with 65 to storm in the back door.

Hideki Matsuyama: T21 as he can’t get it over the finish line recently.

Marc Leishman: MC as he’s still ailing.

Spicy:

Cameron Champ: Last. Which is worse? MC or last for like $14k? I guess every dollar counts but I’ll take not suffering the two extra days.

Matt Kuchar: T39. Wet fart.

Matthew Fitzpatrick: T27. I could copy and paste this result every week and nobody would notice.

Rickie Fowler: T8 heading into Sunday before he crashed and burned to T22. Another who’s having problems putting together four rounds in a week?

Ben An: If there’s one place…to add another MC, this is it.

Remaining Events:

Memorial (Muirfield Village GC, Dublin, OH) — Jack’s place always gets a very solid field and that should increase this year as prep for the PGA Championship at Harding Park in three weeks. Patrick Cantlay will defend.

3M Championship (TPC Twin Cities, Blaine, MN) — The top 52 players were 10-under or lower in the inaugural event last summer. Along with Detroit and Columbus I, these will be the lightest fields of the summer for my money. Matthew Wolff fired 21-under to hold off Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa by a shot.

World Golf Championship – FedEx St Jude Invitational (TPC Southwind, Memphis) — Super tune-up for a major with a major money grab included. TPC Southwind will require all 14 clubs in the bag and will prime every part of the game for a major the following week in San Francisco. Brooks Koepka defends in a limited field event.

Barracuda Championship (Tahoe Mountain Club – Old Greenwood, Truckee, CA) — Double whammy for gamers here as the field will be slight the week before a major (and opposite a WGC event) and it’s brand-new track for the event. No more Montreux. Sad!

PGA Championship (TPC Harding Park, San Francisco) — Koepka will look to make it three straight after claiming the title in 2018 at Bellerive in St. Louis and the 2019 edition at Bethpage Black on Long Island. Hopefully by the first weekend in August the entire international contingent will be able to make this field the deepest, as usual, in history.

Wyndham Championship (Sedgefield Country Club, Greensboro, NC) — The Webb Simpson Open welcomes back defending champion JT Poston who won last year’s event without squaring a bogey on his card. First time that’s happened for the winner since a long time ago (1974). Simpson was second.

FedEx Cup I – THE NORTHERN TRUST (TPC Boston) — Not even a pandemic can turn off the CAPS LOCK button, sadly. Back to TPC Boston after they were removed from the FedExCup Playoffs schedule last year when the number of events was reduced from four to three. Past winners include Bryson DeChambeau (2018), Justin Thomas (2017), Rory McIlroy (2016, 2012), Rickie Fowler (2015), Webb Simpson (2011) and Phil and Tiger in the “old” days.

FedEx Cup II – BMW Championship (Olympia Fields – North Course, Chicago) — Jim Furyk won the 2003 U.S. Open here. There was speculation running wild this week that this even could be moved because of the restrictions in Chicago and the state of Illinois. Stay tuned.

FedEx Cup III – The TOUR Championship (East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta) — Rory McIlroy will defend his playoff crown. Make sure you know how your league is handling the FedExCup Playoffs!

Let’s see some bogeys!

19-under every single week is doing my head in, and that’s fine, because I understand WHY it is happening.

For the first time in the restart it sounds like there will rough that is actually rough. Fairways that will play firm and fast. Greens that will be bouncy and quick.

The entire course is going to be stripped of grass Monday morning after the event and will be re-sodded. Do you think they’re going to worry about it getting burned out? I wouldn’t think so. Same reason they didn’t flinch hosting two consecutive events here. It was getting torn up regardless so let’s get it FIRED UP FAST and hear COMPLAINING again from the pros.

Ah, golf!

THE PICK – Patrick Cantlay

Part of me wants to save him for the Poa of TPC Harding Park but since I haven’t made any proper decisions this year as of yet, WHY START NOW!

His scoring average is 69.25 and he’s won and finished fourth the last two years. I’m not over-thinking this week as I did all of my thinking last week.

 

Safety Dance:

Bryson DeChambeau: Time to question the theory of bomb and gouge (rough, tough greens) or back it up and go? The 2018 champ has more than one gear and won’t be afraid to run through all of them.

Justin Thomas: Bitter disappointment at not closing out Morikawa last week should fuel the fire. If that’s not an enough, go check out the story about Nicklaus sending him a text that said “Congratulations for winning”. Jack left after the 50 footer went in, expecting the day to be over. Oops.

Tiger Woods: Hard to turn a blind eye to the five-time winner but in THIS format, I can. If this was in the rhythm of a normal season, I would be tooting a different horn or probably have blown him out at Augusta. The stop-start nature of this puts me off. I’ll see what’s brewing at TPC Harding Park.

 

Spicy:

Gary Woodland: Made too many putts last week not to win. Won’t have any problem getting it around again this week.

Hideki Matsuyama: Put four rounds together already! Great ball-striking numbers, as usual, last week. MAKE A PUTT.

Billy Horschel: Made everything last week so a tune-up tee-to-green should help make it click.

Tyrrell Hatton: Not many are hotter and the Englishman is doing it throughout his bag. People think Daniel Berger should be on here, ok, fine. I’ll point out he’s won TWICE at FESJC.

Collin Morikawa: Can’t fake it tee-to-green like he does. I’m going hold off until the FedExCup Playoffs or hopefully 3M.

2018-19

My contributions for the major championships and PLAYERS selection were worse than bad so to still break the $10 million mark with those awful results was encouraging.

Another valuable lesson learned is that the Playoffs are for the big boys. Now, WHICH big boys make this more and more difficult and that’s why it’s enjoyable and maddening all at the same time. Only McIlroy and Woods have won the FedExCup twice so start there.
