Welcome aboard!
If you need more explanations, please go back and read last week or the week of Sentry. I’m trying to streamline this for the degenerates who want the pick NOW NOW NOW.
Last Week – Arnold Palmer Invitational
Tommy Fleetwood – MC
Bit windy, yeah?
Blowers were on and scores were through the roof but those who rode Tyrrell Hatton’s T6 in Mexico to a massive win, congrats. My theory on Tommy Fleetwood bouncing straight back in conditions that would favor his game sounded great on paper. His MC wasn’t close so another week of a top 10 player not firing has killed my season. Right country (England) wrong Englishman. That doesn’t make me feel any better.
Carnage in all formats for me.
Safety Dance:
Rory McIlroy – T5: Played like shit and hit the top five. Joke’s on us for not taking him on a non-winning week.
Henrik Stenson – MC: I’m done relying on 40-somethings in this game. There’s simply no point. #Ageist.
Spicy:
Francesco Molinari – WD: Nothing going on here at the moment. Nada.
Ben An – T56: Last two holes on Friday took him from contention to making the cut on the number (Double & Triple). Never recovered.
Justin Rose – MC: Can’t just ride course horses, folks.
Rafa Cabrera Bello – MC: Smooth 74-82.
Hideki Matsuyama – T56: Made 22 bogeys.
Marc Leishman – 2nd: Always navigates well here but with a win three events ago, is he too comfy?
3 AM at the Blackjack Table:
Jason Kokrak – T18, Emiliano Grillo – DQ, Brendan Steele -MC
This Week – THE PLAYERS Championship
The move to March saw Jon Rahm and Tommy Fleetwood as the final pairing last year.
McIlroy won from the second to last group playing with 2016 champ Jason Day.
Eddie Pepperell and Jhonattan Vegas closed with matching 66s for T3.
Dustin Johnson and Brandt Snedeker shared fifth.
Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Rose and Brian Harman rounded off the top 10 (T8).
Heavy hitters.
THE PICK
Since I need to win this week and every one after to get back into my league, I would do well to nail this pick.
I’ve gone back and forth on many options and the tie-breaker for me will be tee-to-green play. The course, while playing soft and longer, still can’t be played from pine straw, bunkers or water. The weather suggests that birdies should be back in style this week so I’m riding with those who will have the most chances on the greens to make them make pars.
With a monster purse and a monster first place, a big hitter is required.
Jon Rahm has all the tools to complete the job and the fresh lesson of last year on what NOT to do.
Viva Espana!
Safety Dance:
Rory McIlroy: Every week he plays. You just have to guess right. Wash your hands, rinse, repeat. Defying history shouldn’t bother him. I’m saving him for a major.
Adam Scott: Class tee-to-green and long putter has been excellent over the last year.
Justin Thomas: Fearless birdie maker is rested and ready.
Spicy:
Bryson DeChambeau: New body = new results = scorching form.
Dustin Johnson: Tough lay down. Glowingly talking about scoring and March earlier this week.
Webb Simpson: Spicy in the fact he hasn’t had a multiple win season since 2011. Won’t talk you down.
Matt Kuchar: Comfortable here and not in the spotlight for anything else besides golf.
Jason Day: Beware the injured golfer who rakes on this track.
3 AM at the Blackjack Table:
Matthew Fitzpatrick, Ian Poulter, Joel Dahmen

History Channeled:
2018-19
My majors contributions and PLAYERS selection were worse than bad so to still break the $10 million mark with those awful results was encouraging.
Another valuable lesson learned is that the Playoffs are for the big boys. Now, WHICH big boys make this more and more difficult and that’s why it’s enjoyable and maddening all at the same time. Only McIlroy and Woods have won the FedExCup twice so start there.
