WGC-HSBC Champions & SFC OAD

10.25.17

Not enough hours in the day for a full SFC preview but if you choose to read you’ll see some angles thrown in here at the end.

The Asia swing features the second event in as many weeks with a YUGE payday.

Just because this is week four doesn’t mean it’s time to toss a pick away!

One-and-done

Each week I painfully writhe and wretch trying to figure out the proper strategy to find a player that will hit the top 10. Wins are great but aren’t likely, so I’m satisfied with having a chance to hit the big money. Missed cuts are absolutely the death in this game, but even the surest of things don’t always happen in the reality world of fantasy golf.

Remember, fade or follow, it’s up to you.

Gamers who are new to OAD must remember that the most lucrative purses, the majors (four events), WGC events (four events), THE PLAYERS and FedExCup Playoffs (four events), are down the road and you’ll need to save some big boys for these events. We also added THE CJ CUP last week so that makes 14 of them, and the second in two weeks.

Pay attention, it’s free.

Thermometer:

Streaks have an abrupt way of ending.

Solo second and T-7 and now T-47 suggests I’m moving in the wrong direction.

Safeway — Tony Finau, 2nd.

CIMB — Paul Casey, T-7.

CJ CUP — Keegan Bradley, T-47.

Last week:

Barf.

I’m trying to remind myself that I’ll use Leishman down the road again, and I will, but that’s brutal.

Especially with almost $1 million being paid to solo second that he cashed.

I dodged the 77 bullet with Casey last week so I guess my luck was up.

Hey look! Luke List top five! Too bad I didn’t have the guts to pull that trigger…

Sigh.

CJ CUP Recap:

My Weekly Finalists:

My Choice: Keegan Bradley — T-47

Close Second: Marc Leishman — 2ND

Outliers: Gary Woodland — T-40, Thomas Pieters — T-28

Gut Shot(s): Kyle Stanley — T-19

Rank Outsider(s): Luke List — T-5, Ollie Schniederjans — T-19, Jenghun Wang — ALMOST last

Keys this Week:

Bombs away!

Check the winners.

Check the top 10’s over the years.

All power players and usually premium players.

This is one of the 14 weeks of the year a premium player MUST be taken (four WGC events, four majors, THE PLAYERS, CJ Cup and four FEC Playoff events).

This shouldn’t be a difficult one this week.

You do you.

I’ll do me.

We can learn from each other.

My Weekly Finalists:

My Choice: Hideki Matsuyama

Close Second: Marc Leishman

Outliers: Ross Fisher, Tyrell Hatton, Matthew Fitzpatrick

Gut Shot(s): Francesco Molinari

Rank Outsider(s): Kyle Stanley, Patrick Cantlay,  Yao Ming

QUESTION(S) OF THE WEEK:

The winner this week will be…

No mark, that’s for sure. The “worst” players to win a WGC recently are Shane Lowry and Russell Knox so nobody lucks into one of these

Why all the Euros?

Good question and better answers!

1.) They’re currently in season and this event counts in their Race to Dubai.

2.) They’re used to travel and weekly culture shocks as they hobnob around the continent and the rest of the world.

3.) Most of the ones I have listed will NOT be in the Playoffs so “saving” them for later could be a bit silly.

Should I avoid US Tour players?

Not necessarily but I don’t think Dustin Johnson flying over for one event makes sense. I’d rather load him up after he’s knocked off some rust. As I’ve mentioned before, when $9.75 million is on the line with a very top-heavy field and no cut, it’s not the week to play defense. Winning $1.66 million this week is not irrelevant. Saving guys for the Playoffs are if your league pays more for those wins. It’s case-by-case for most of you.

Sanderson Farms

My Weekly Finalists:

My Choice: Chesson Hadley

Close Second: Jason Kokrak, Andrew Landry

Outliers: Tyler Duncan, Bronson Burgoon, Brice Garnett

Gut Shot(s): Austin Cook, Elvis Pressley

Rank Outsider(s): Hunter Mahan, Blayne Barber, Sam Burns

Good luck and remember that it’s already Thursday in China!
