If you had Justin Thomas, you should have been fine.
I did not have Justin Thomas.
Each week, I’ll trot out guys who I believe who fit the course, the game and the road map, plus add some substitutes. Four starters are supported by two bench players each week. Remember, once a player tees off in your lineup he burns a start, so make sure you need to sub out instead of want to sub out.
You’ll learn a few things about me each week in this column.
Games, like this one, that involve daily substitution options, I am terrible at playing.
I’ll give you my best four starters and two bench options but it’s up to you to outguess me on which rounds they should sit or play.
Last Week — Sony Open
If you put Justin Thomas and the five best available OWGR players on your roster last week you would have had:
Justin Thomas: WIN
Jordan Spieth (No. 5): Third
Hideki Matsuyama (No. 6): T-27
Paul Casey (No. 14): MC
Justin Rose (No. 15): Second
Branden Grace (No. 17): T-13
Three of those players had the three best possible scores for the week. I bet you can figure out which three! All you would have had to do was guess between Matsuyama for the fourth position for the weekend.
See? It’s EASY!
Since I did not have that formula, I lost 60 spots in the season ranking but still check in at No. 212.
Sony Open
- Tournament Points: 1,348
- Tournament Rank: 5,888
- Season Points: 7,919
- Season Rank: 212
This Week
Since multiple courses are being played the ONLY METRIC BEING USED THIS WEEK will be SCORING. Anytime there are multiple courses, scoring is the ONLY factor so get ready for it again next week at Torrey Pines and again at Pebble Beach.
Since scoring is the only metric, I can make the argument that your lineup should have balance so you can afford to dodge the hardest course (Stadium Course) for the first three rounds. Two players from each course would be optimum if this event was played in a vacuum.
It’s not.
There’s wind. There’s rain. There’s amateurs EVERYWHERE.
Remember, this segment of the season takes us up to the week before the Masters, a run of 13 total tournaments. Also remember you only get to use each golfer THREE times.
I’m riding with big boys who are going to be bothered by some breeze and rain drops.
