Emergency 9: Farmers Insurance Open Round 2

Yeah, it’s almost noon, get over it.

I’ll give you TREBLE your money back, deal?

Emergency 9

Here are nine tidbits from the Round 2 of the Farmers Insurance Open that gamers can use tomorrow, this weekend or down the road. The South Course at Torrey Pines is the annual host. The 156 pros in the field will play a round on the South Course and North Course to determine who plays the weekend.

Sitting on top of the World

New clubs, new driver, new caddy and zero new problems so far for Justin Rose. His 66 was the second-best round of the day on the vaunted South Course. Trailing by one after the first round, he now is leading by three with two more rounds on the most challenging of the two courses.

Fantasy Island

These were the top-10 selected golfers in the PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf game. If you’re wondering why you’re not doing well, here’s why:

Rank Player Place % Ownership
1 Marc Leishman T63 12.75
2 Tony Finau T30 12.57
3 Jon Rahm T3 8.91
4 Brandt Snedeker T63 6.89
5 Xander Schauffele T39 6.56
6 Jason Day T30 6.40
7 Charles Howell III T9 5.86
8 Justin Rose 1st 4.91
9 Gary Woodland T63 4.71
10 Patrick Cantlay MC 3.71

Another perfect day saw scores remain relatively low as three-under 141 saw 77 pros slide into the weekend. The magic number of 78 was avoided so there is no MDF this week. Weather conditions should be perfect for the final two rounds.

Ror-ing into Contention

The round of the day came from Rory McIlroy as he only needed 65 to get around the North course in his first attempt. He opened with 31 on the back and found two eagles in his first nine holes. Only needing 34 on the front nine to close out his day, he’s now in the top 10 (T9) and a factor.

Hi, Hideki

Posting 69 in windy conditions last year in the final round matched his best effort on the South Course in eight tries. His 66 in Round 2 blew that figure away as he led the field on that track in Strokes-Gained: Around-the-Green and was second Strokes-Gained: Tee-to-Green. He’s only made one bogey in 36 holes.

Ryan’s Hope

I’m guessing he’s been kicking himself for leaving this event off of his schedule from 2011 through 2017. The Texan showed up last year and lost in a three-man playoff and his return sees him sit T3 after a pair of 67’s.

South Course Leaderboard

Playing 2.039 strokes harder than the North, the South is playing all weekend. Here were the best from Round 2:

Place Player Score
1st Justin Rose 66
2nd Hideki Matsuyama 66
T6 Sangmoon Bae 67
T9 Sepp Straka 67
T18 Adam Svensson 67
T18 Hank Lebioda 67
T37 Danny Willett 68

 Tiger Woods and Friends

All three advanced to the weekend of Woods, Tony Finau and local favorite Xander Schauffele but none are in serious contention yet. After 36 holes they will probably be relieved to just get on with it today. It’s never easy to navigate the massive crowds and everything else that goes along with playing with the world’s most popular golfer.

Ctrl-C Ctrl-V

Hey, look! It’s Charles Howell III in the top 10. He’s never missed in 17 tries and will look for his first win beginning the weekend seven shots back of Rose. He began the week with a bogey-free 66 on the South so I’d expect some more elevation up the board as the weekend moves on.
